McMaster Students Union stands with all students combatting anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism

In light of the tragic deaths of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd, D’Andre Campbell and countless other lives lost to police brutality, the MSU stands in solidarity with those calling out and combatting racism and police violence. For this reason, we call on McMaster Security Services to release all aggregated data relating to stops, detainments and arrests made on campus, as well as the demographic data of those individuals.

McMaster University to move classes online for fall 2020

The safety of the campus community is paramount. With a recent spike in Ontarian cases and the potential for a second wave of Covid-19 in the fall, McMaster University’s decision to move fall instruction to an online model is a necessary and responsible precaution to help reduce the spread of the virus. However, hearing this news is not easy. Students are understandably disheartened to learn campus life will be impacted moving into fall 2020.

MSU Welcomes 2020-2021 Board of Directors

MSU President Giancarlo Da-Ré and the three Vice Presidents of the MSU take office on May 1, 2020. Though the physical MSU space remains closed due to COVID-19, the Board of Directors will continue work remotely and meet online. Together, the team shares numerous objectives, including increasing academic accessibility, decreasing financial barriers to students, and supporting students, including MSU volunteers and employees, as the pandemic continues.

McMaster University launches Student Relief Fund

In response to the financial insecurity wrought by the global Covid-19 pandemic, McMaster has established the Student Relief Fund to provide immediate financial assistance to domestic and international students. Funds can assist with students studying abroad, caring for dependents, quarantine accommodations, food, rent, and utilities.

Federal government announces financial support plan specifically for students

The Prime Minister announced a new financial support plan designed for students – the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB). Responding to student advocacy concerning the students’ eligibility limitations for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), CESB (once approved by Parliament) will provide $1,250 per month to students or $2000 per month for those with dependants or a disability.
